With nearly two decades of experience in intellectual property law and a strong technical background, Usha brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will be invaluable to our clients. Her practice focuses on patent application drafting and prosecution, where she excels in guiding inventors through the complex patenting process and helping businesses build strategic, cost-effective IP portfolios.
Before embarking on her legal career, Usha worked as an engineer at a Navy lab and at Motorola, equipping her with firsthand insight into the technological innovations that drive the patent world. Over the years, she has successfully drafted hundreds of patent applications across a diverse range of industries, including wireless communication, electronic circuits, automotive sensor and processing systems, consumer and medical devices, semiconductors, integrated circuit designs, machine learning applications, and software.
Usha has conducted over a thousand interviews with USPTO examiners and has extensive experience in clearance and opinion work, as well as litigation support. Her deep understanding of the patent landscape makes her an invaluable resource for companies seeking to protect their innovations.
Beyond her legal practice, Usha is an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), where she currently serves as Chair of the Electronics and Computer Law Committee. She has authored multiple articles on patent procurement strategies, including addressing 101 rejections. Her dedication to thought leadership and professional development underscores her commitment to advancing the field of intellectual property law.
Usha holds a J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tennessee Tech University. She is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as well as in Virginia and the District of Columbia. Additionally, she is admitted to the Eastern District of Virginia.
Her professional affiliations include membership in prestigious engineering and honor societies such as Tau Beta Pi, IEEE Eta Kappa Nu, and Kappa Mu Epsilon, reflecting her distinguished academic and professional achievements.
